Summertime Essential Oil DIYs

Summer is almost here!  Backyard BBQs, warm weather, and sitting by the pool! Wait don't forget the hot sunshine and the bugs! 

Create your own non-toxic DIYs for the summer.  You get to choose what you put on your skin and in the air of your home!

Enjoy some of my favorite summer blends, DIYs, and oily tips and tricks. Let's make it a healthy summer!
But…🚨SAFETY FIRST! Before we dive into all the fun DIY’s for the summer I want to make sure you are always using your oils safely, so let’s chat about photosensitivity real quick!?  
When we use certain oils topically, where the sun is exposed to our skin, our skin can get a bit red and tender.
Almost all citrus oils are photosensitive, meaning they should be avoided topically before direct sunlight or artificial UV rays (think tanning beds or booths).
☀️ If you will be heading out in the sun, be sure any rollers or sprays you apply that contain citrus oils are applied “where the sun don’t shine” AKA the bottoms of your feet, under your clothes, etc.
The following oils and blends have been labeled as photosensitive by dōTERRA: AromaTouch®, Bergamot, doTERRA Breathe®, doTERRA Cheer®, Citrus Bliss®, Clementine, Cumin, Elevation, doTERRA Forgive®, Grapefruit, InTune®, Kumquat, Lemon, Lime, doTERRA Motivate®, doTERRA On Guard®, Purify, Slim & Sassy®, Sunny Citrus, Tangerine, Wild Orange and Zendocrine.

Why DIY summer essentials?

My favorite reason to DIY it is because I get to control the ingredients in products.  I can easily eliminate toxins and other harmful ingredients.   I get to use the ingredients I want and can keep my home more toxin free.

Are you ready to dive into some recipes and DIYs?!

Stay Hydrated

If you aren’t a water lover, skip the nasty artificial water flavorings and try this:
💧 Set up a hydration station with your favorite citrus oils.   Use one drop in 8 oz. of water.
🍓 Cut up fresh fruit to add to your water (Try strawberry, mango, or pineapple)
🍋 Make “light” lemonade with ¼ to ½ the amount of sugar (add fresh fruit too)
Why is hydration so important?
Our bodies are 80% water. It keeps our digestive health moving along, supports our brain health, keeps our skin glowing and our whole body functioning properly.

Scented Soap Bubbles 

Keep those littles busy for hours with this Giant Scented Bubbles recipe.
⚈ 6 cups Cold Water
⚈ ½ cup Dish Soap
⚈ ½ cup Corn Starch
⚈ 1 TBSP Baking Powder
⚈ 1 TBSP Glycerin
⚈ 15 drops Citrus Bliss (or oil of choice)
Dissolve the cornstarch in cold water first. Add the remaining ingredients and stir slowly so as not to create a lot of froth. Allow to sit for a least one hour, stirring occasionally as the cornstarch settles. Some cornstarch may settle to the bottom, this will not affect the quality of your bubbles.

You will also need a giant bubble wand.

After Sun Spray

Are you a sun goddess? I can admit, we all get a bit too much sun sometimes. 🌞 I have the perfect skin support for you:
In a 4 ounce spray bottle combine:
💧 10 drops of Frankincense
💧 10 drops of Lavender
💧 5 drops of Peppermint
💧 5 drops of Helichrysum
💧 ½ ounce of FCO
Top with 1 oz witch hazel and 2 oz water.
Shake and spray before use!

Bug Bite Blend

With summer comes bugs and unfortunately, sometimes bug bites. Especially if we forget our TerraShield. 🙁
Don’t worry! We have oils for that! Try this recipe out for itch relief.
In a 10 mL Roller add:
💧 10 drops Purify
💧 5 drops Lavender
💧 5 drops Copaiba
💧 5 drops Peppermint
Pro Tip → Try Purify on bee stings.  

Mango Popsicles

Craving a sweet and satisfying treat, but don’t want all the added sugar? Try these Strawberry Mango popsicles.

In a blender add:

2 cups of fresh Mango (don’t like mango → use pineapple)
1 TBSP Lime Juice
5 drops Lime Essential Oil

Blend together until smooth. Pour into your popsicle molds until ¾ of the way full. Slice up 6 strawberries and shove slices into each mold. Cover and freeze for at least 3 hours. Serve and enjoy!

Fruit Dip

Living by the pool all summer? Whip up this tasty and refreshing fruit dip!

✔️ ½ cup Greek Yogurt (for dairy free, substitute coconut milk yogurt)
✔️ 1 ½ TBSP Honey
✔️ 3 drops Madagascar Vanilla
✔️ 3 drops Wild Orange

Mix all the ingredients together and chill for 30 minutes. Cut up your favorite fruit, dip, and enjoy!

Pro Tip → I also like stirring this over my fruit salad for a creamy consistency with extra protein.

Oils for Pests

Summertime often means an increase in pests–whether they fly, crawl, or make webs. I love that I can naturally combat them and not need to use store bought bug repellent. 🤢

✅Lemon Eucalyptus
✅Tea Tree

Whether you make your own roller or spray or use these oils in your favorite diffuser, pests will keep their distance.
